He is a young repo man from the streets who wants something bigger, and his rise from Forum Drive to a hillside mansion carries much of the story. This guide covers his background, how and when you take control of him, his biggest jobs, his special ability, the ending choice he faces and where Rockstar Games took him next.
If you came here from our GTA V apk page hoping to play him on a phone, note that the game is officially available only on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Everything below applies to those versions.

Background in South Los Santos
Franklin never knew his father, and his mother died of a drug addiction when he was a small boy. He was raised by his grandparents and later shared their house with his aunt, Denise Clinton, who appears in the game as a loud, self-help-obsessed presence he can barely stand. At school he was thrown out for hitting a teacher, a detail he admits to Michael during a friend activity.
Franklin grew up around the Chamberlain Gangster Families, and with Lamar he formed a small independent set called the Forum Gangsters. By 2013 he is tired of petty crime that goes nowhere.
His day job at the start is with Simeon Yetarian, an Armenian businessman who runs the Premium Deluxe Motorsport dealership. Simeon sells expensive cars on credit to people who cannot afford them, and when the buyers fall behind on the inflated payments, Franklin and his friend are sent to take the cars back. It is legal on paper, dodgy in practice, and it puts him behind the wheel of fast cars from the first minute. He wants real money and a way out of the neighbourhood, and that hunger drives almost every choice he makes in the story.
He once dated Tanisha Jackson, who left because she feared his lifestyle would get her hurt. She stays an important person in his life. In the canon ending she calls him to say she is about to marry someone else, which feels like a sad full stop, yet the online story years later reveals a happier outcome.
How to Unlock Franklin in GTA Story Mode
You do not need to buy or download anything extra. Franklin is part of the base game and unlocks automatically early on. After the snowy Prologue in North Yankton, the very next job is called Franklin and Lamar. Finishing it gives you the ability to play as him, his first safehouse and his car. There is no separate purchase, code or setting involved.
- Prologue: you play Michael and Trevor in 2004.
- Franklin and Lamar: repossess two sports cars and race them back to Simeon’s dealership. This is the point where he becomes playable.
- Repossession: recover a green motorcycle from a rival gang’s turf.
- Complications: break into a rich man’s house to repossess his son’s car, which leads to meeting Michael.
After that, you can switch between the available characters at any time outside a job using the character wheel. So when people ask how to unlock Franklin, the honest answer is that you simply play the opening hour. Some later jobs are locked to him, while others let you switch to Michael or Trevor mid-mission at marked points.
Role in the Grand Theft Auto V Story
Franklin is the player’s way into the criminal world of the game. He starts at street level in Los Santos, learns the trade from an older robber, and ends up in the middle of a fight between federal agents, a billionaire and old partners. For many Franklin GTA fans, this is the most relatable arc in the series because he is ambitious rather than evil.
Is Franklin a good guy? Not exactly. He steals cars, robs stores and carries out contract hits for Lester. But compared with the other two, he is calmer, more thoughtful and more loyal to the people around him. He questions the jobs he takes, keeps asking whether the money is worth the risk, and often tries to calm Michael and Trevor down. That moral middle ground is what makes his final choice feel so heavy.
Lamar, Chop and the Repo Jobs
Lamar Davis is his oldest friend and his biggest liability. He is funny, loyal and constantly dragging Franklin into risky schemes, from the kidnapping plan in the job named Chop, where Franklin first works with the dog, to the ambush in The Long Stretch. Chop later lives with Franklin, and you can walk him, play fetch and take him on outings around the neighbourhood.
The relationship is the emotional base of Franklin’s story. His friend wants him to stay loyal to the hood, while Franklin wants to move up. Their arguments are some of the best-written scenes in the game, and late in the story Franklin risks his life in Lamar Down to rescue his friend from a deadly setup by Stretch at a lumber yard.
Working with Michael and Trevor
The Complications job ends with Franklin meeting Michael De Santa, a retired bank robber living under witness protection. The older man sees promise in him and becomes a kind of mentor. Through Michael, he meets Lester Crest, the planner behind the big jobs, and Trevor Philips, Michael’s unpredictable old partner.
Franklin often plays peacemaker between the two older men. One gives him advice and opportunity, while the other tests his nerves. In Hood Safari, Trevor tags along with Franklin and Lamar on a drug deal that goes wrong in Grove Street, a neat nod to the classic San Andreas setting.

Key Heists and Turning Points
These are the jobs that shape his path through the story:
- The Jewel Store Job: his first real heist with Michael and Lester, robbing the Vangelico store.
- The Hotel Assassination: the first of a series of stock-market hits. It earns Franklin a mansion in the Vinewood Hills.
- Car thefts for Devin Weston: a series of rare-car jobs for Weston, which later puts Franklin in a dangerous position.
- The Merryweather Heist and The Paleto Score: bigger jobs alongside both older men.
- The Big Score: the final heist on the Union Depository, where the crew steals tonnes of gold bullion.
The Ending Choice
After The Big Score, Franklin faces the hardest decision in the game. FIB agent Steve Haines tells him to kill Trevor, and Devin Weston tells him to kill Michael. The game then offers three options:
| Option | Job name | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| A | Something Sensible | Trevor is killed by Franklin |
| B | The Time’s Come | Michael is killed in a fall from a tower |
| C | The Third Way (Deathwish) | Franklin saves both and the trio take on their enemies |
Option C is the canon ending. With the planner’s help, the trio wins a huge shootout at a foundry, then each man takes out a different enemy so no single death can be traced back. Trevor goes after Haines, Michael goes after Stretch and Franklin goes after Wei Cheng. Finally, they push Weston’s car off a cliff with him locked in the trunk, and the billionaire is killed in the explosion. In the endings where one friend is killed, Franklin’s relationship with the survivor turns cold, which is why most players see C as the “true” finale.
Special Ability and Skills
Each lead has a special ability, and Franklin’s suits his driving talent. When you activate it behind the wheel, time slows down, letting you take corners at full speed, weave through traffic and avoid crashes. It works in cars and on motorbikes, and it also helps you aim during drive-by shootings. According to the wiki, the meter starts at about 10 seconds and can last 30 seconds when fully upgraded.
A practical tip: save the meter for moments that matter, such as police chases, tight race corners or the motorbike escape through the storm drains at the end of The Jewel Store Job. Using it in short bursts lets you recover from mistakes without wasting the whole bar.
Franklin also starts with the best driving stat of the three, so he is the natural pick for street races, getaway sections and vehicle side jobs. Practising driving and shooting with him raises his stats over time. If you want a fast way to build his ability meter, simply drive a lot, especially at high speed without hitting anything.
Side Jobs, Cars and Homes
Outside the main story, Franklin has his own set of Strangers and Freaks missions, the optional side jobs that count towards 100% completion. His include:
- Tonya’s towing jobs, which start with Pulling Favors.
- Barry’s Grass Roots series.
- Beverly Felton’s Paparazzo jobs, chasing celebrity photos around Vinewood.
- Dom Beasley’s extreme sports challenges, starting with Risk Assessment.
- Mary-Ann Quinn’s Exercising Demons fitness race.
- Omega’s Far Out, which sends him hunting for spaceship parts.
These side jobs are a good way to see more of his personality and of Los Santos itself, and several of them are short enough to finish in a single evening.
Franklin is the tidy one of the trio. Switch scenes often show him washing his vehicles or doing chores, and he keeps his bedroom and later his mansion clean. His two personal rides are easy to spot:
- A unique white Bravado Buffalo S, his signature car from the first job.
- A green Western Bagger motorcycle, the bike from the Repossession job.
He has two safehouses. The first is the family house on Forum Drive, and the second is the Vinewood Hills mansion at 3671 Whispymound Drive, which unlocks after The Hotel Assassination. Moving there marks the point where his life starts to change, even if Lamar and Denise mock him for it.
His in-game career stats are tracked on the official Social Club page for the PC version, which is the best place to compare completion, driving and shooting numbers with friends.

Where He Is Now: The Contract
Franklin returned as a main character in GTA Online, the game’s online multiplayer world, with The Contract update in December 2021. Set years after the story, he is now a successful businessman who runs F. Clinton and Partner, a celebrity solutions agency, with the player as his new partner. His old friend, Chop and Imani, a tech expert, help run the office from a building in the city’s Little Seoul area. Franklin Clinton the businessman still talks like the kid from Forum Drive, which is part of his charm.
The main storyline sees him take on Dr. Dre as a client after the producer’s phone, full of unreleased music, goes missing shortly before he was due to fly out to host a beach party on Cayo Perico. This update also confirms that Option C is canon, since Franklin, Lamar and the other leads are alive. Franklin is now married to Tanisha, the couple have children, and the mansion carries a sign reading “The Clintons”. He also appears in the Short Trips series, where you play as him and his best friend.
You can play The Contract on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It came as a free update for existing players.

Voice Actor and Real-Life Background
Franklin is voiced by Shawn Fonteno, who also performed the motion capture for the role. Fun fact: Fonteno is the cousin of Young Maylay, the voice of Carl Johnson from the 2004 classic San Andreas. He returned to voice the character again in 2021 for The Contract.
Fonteno’s performance is a big reason the character works. He delivers the street banter, the frustration with Denise and the quiet doubt before the final choice in the same believable voice, and he did much of it on the motion-capture stage alongside the other leads.
Many people search whether he is “real”. He is a fictional character created by Rockstar North, though the performance and the street details make him feel grounded. Many fans rewatch his scenes on video, but playing his story is the only way to see how his choices add up.
