Since March 2025, anyone who opens Grand Theft Auto V on PC sees two entries in their library: Legacy and Enhanced. Both run the same campaign and the same Los Santos, but they are built for very different hardware. This guide explains every real difference using Rockstar’s own notes and the Steam store listing, so you can choose the right build for your machine instead of guessing.
Quick note for phone users who arrived from our GTA 5 mobile apk page: everything below is about the official PC game. There is no Android or iPhone release of GTA 5, so these two builds are the only versions you can install on a computer today.

The Short Answer for GTA 5 PC Players
If your PC has a solid-state drive, a graphics card with at least 4 GB of video memory and 8 GB of RAM, pick the Enhanced version. It looks better, loads faster and receives every new update. If you are on an older laptop, a hard disk, or you rely on roleplay servers and older mods, stay with the 2015 build.
You do not have to pay twice. The upgrade is free for existing PC owners, and new buyers get both editions in a single purchase, so you can install one, test it and switch later.
In the Rockstar Games Launcher the two appear as separate titles, while Steam and the Epic Games Store show them as two library entries. Keeping both installed takes about 230 GB, so most people keep only one. On a typical home broadband connection, the 105 GB download for the new build is best left running overnight, and it is worth checking any monthly data cap first.
Garage clear-outs work the same on both builds, so our guide on how to sell cars in GTA 5 applies whichever build you pick.
What the Enhanced Version Is
Rockstar released the upgraded PC version on 4 March 2025. It brings the features that first appeared on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022 to computers, plus a few that exist only on PC. In practice, Enhanced is the PC equivalent of those current-generation consoles, rebuilt for modern graphics cards, fast storage and new controllers.
It is not a remake. The missions, characters and map are the same as in the original version, and your Story Mode choices play out exactly as before. What changes is how the world is drawn and loaded, and which multiplayer content you can reach. Think of it as the same GTA 5 with a new engine room.
What GTA 5 Legacy Still Offers
GTA 5 Legacy is the April 2015 PC release with a decade of patches on top. Rockstar kept it available so that people whose hardware cannot meet the new minimum specs can keep playing. Its strengths are low hardware demands and the huge library of community tools built around it over ten years.
It is still supported. Title Update 1.73 notes on the official support site list recent GTA Online events, such as the October 2026 Halloween content and the Pegassi Horus supercar, for both PC builds. Even so, some newer items are now limited to the new build, which we cover below.
Side-by-Side: Enhanced Upgrades in Detail
The table sums up the official differences. After it, we explain what each one means when you sit down to play.
| Feature | Legacy (2015) | Enhanced (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Ray-traced shadows and reflections | No | Yes |
| Ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion | No | Yes (PC only) |
| NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR upscaling | No | Yes |
| Storage needed | 125 GB | 105 GB, SSD required |
| DirectStorage fast loading | No | Yes, on supported setups |
| DualSense adaptive triggers | No | Yes |
| Dolby Atmos audio | No | Yes |
| Shared lobbies with the other build | No | No |
Graphics and Ray Tracing
The headline change is ray tracing. The new build adds ray-traced shadows and reflections, the same effects console players got in 2022, and goes further with ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion, which the developer says are PC-only. Light bounces off wet roads and car paint more naturally, and shaded alleys look darker and more believable.
Upscaling matters for mid-range hardware. Support for NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR lets the game render at a lower resolution and sharpen the image, so you can switch on heavier effects without losing too many frames. The Enhanced version also handles higher resolutions, ultrawide screens and high frame rates better than the 2015 code.

Loading, Controllers and Audio
Loading is where an SSD pays off. With DirectStorage on supported Windows setups, Los Santos and Blaine County load much faster than on the older build, which often sat on long loading screens. An SSD is listed as a minimum requirement for the new build, so a hard disk will not do.
PlayStation fans can plug in a DualSense controller and feel adaptive trigger resistance, from gunfire to rough road surfaces. Audio gets Dolby Atmos support and better quality for speech, cut-scenes and music, which you will hear clearly on good headphones.
GTA 5 Online Updates and Additional Content
New multiplayer content reaches both builds, but not all of it. In the July 2026 Kortz Center Heist update, the patch notes marked two vehicles (the Grotti Veleno GT with the HSW upgrade and an armoured Vapid Caracara) and several new Mission Creator features as available only on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Enhanced on PC. The upgraded build also brings the Career Builder for new characters and GTA+ membership on PC. Expect this gap to grow, because the newest technical improvements target modern hardware first.
System Requirements Compared
These figures come from the Steam store pages for both builds, checked on 20 October 2026. The publisher notes that the system requirements can change with future updates.
| Spec | Legacy minimum | Enhanced minimum | Enhanced recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 | Windows 11 |
| Processor | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 / AMD Phenom 9850 | Intel Core i7-4770 / AMD FX-9590 | Intel Core i5-9600K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| RAM | 4 GB | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| Graphics | NVIDIA 9800 GT 1 GB / AMD HD 4870 1 GB | GTX 1630 4 GB / Radeon RX 6400 4 GB | RTX 3060 8 GB / RX 6600 XT 8 GB |
| Storage | 125 GB | 105 GB on an SSD | 105 GB on a DirectStorage-ready SSD |
Can a Low-End PC Run Enhanced?
Maybe, but check two things first, because the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V you can run depends more on your graphics card and drive than on your processor. The first is video memory: a card with only 2 GB of VRAM is below the official minimum for Enhanced. The second is storage, because an SSD is mandatory. A budget laptop with an older Intel chip and integrated graphics will run the legacy version far more comfortably, and many players on such machines are better off staying there.
For reference, a GTX 1650 with 4 GB of memory, which is common in budget gaming laptops from the last few years, sits above the GTX 1630 named as the minimum card, so it should start the new build at lower settings. Laptops with only Intel UHD or older integrated graphics fall below that line and should stay on the older build.
If your PC sits just above the minimum, install both, run the same mission on each, and keep the one that feels smoother. On the Enhanced version, turn off the ray-traced effects first, since they are the most demanding settings.

Moving Your Progress Across
You do not lose your hours when you switch. There is a one-time transfer for both campaign saves and multiplayer characters, but the two work slightly differently.
Story Save Migration
During the preload period and after launch, PC players could upload Story Mode progress from the old build and then download it inside the new one. If you finished the story on the 2015 build, you can carry that save across and continue with your completion percentage and money intact.
Profile Migration for GTA 5 Online
The official support article explains that you start the transfer from the landing page or pause menu of Enhanced. It works PC to PC only, not between PC and console, so a PlayStation or Xbox version save cannot come across. Some profiles are not eligible, for example after a ban or with suspicious progress. Your old character stays on the legacy edition after the profile migration, but the two copies do not sync afterwards, so whatever you earn on one side stays there. While the transfer runs, you cannot join GTA Online on either build.
Modding and the Legacy Version
Mods are the main reason some players stay put. Rockstar has said it does not normally act against non-commercial PC mods made for the offline campaign, but mods must never be used in GTA Online. Over ten years, the legacy version built up the biggest collection of scripts, car packs and graphics tweaks, and most of them were made for its files.
The upgraded build changed many file formats, so older modding tools and scripts often need new releases before they work, and some never get one. Popular script loaders have released builds for Enhanced, but support varies from tool to tool. Roleplay servers are the other big factor: at the time of writing, the FiveM platform runs on the old build, not the new one. If either matters to you, keep GTA 5 Legacy installed alongside the new build.
Who Should Stay on Legacy and Who Should Switch to Enhanced
Choose the upgraded build if you:
- Have an SSD, a 4 GB or better graphics card and at least 8 GB of RAM.
- Want the best visuals, including ray-traced effects and DLSS or FSR.
- Play GTA Online and want access to every new vehicle and feature.
- Use a DualSense controller or a Dolby Atmos headset.
Stay with the older build if you:
- Play on an older laptop or a hard disk drive.
- Depend on roleplay servers or older offline mods.
- Need the lightest possible hardware load for a smooth frame rate.
Steam user ratings back this up. The Enhanced store page shows a Very Positive score (81% of about 79,000 English reviews when we checked on 20 October 2026), and many complaints come from older machines. For a fair legacy comparison, judge each build on your own PC rather than on someone else’s benchmark. Both are the same Grand Theft Auto V underneath; only the technology around the game differs, and you can always return to the other version later.
Once your edition is sorted, carry on with our next guide on GTA 5 Franklin, the young hustler whose story opens the Los Santos chapters.
FAQs
Is the Enhanced edition free if I already own the game on PC?
Yes. It is a free upgrade for existing PC owners on Steam, the Epic Games Store and the official launcher. New buyers get both editions in one purchase.
Can players on the two builds join the same session?
No. The two PC builds use separate lobbies, so you and your friends must pick the same one to play together.
Does the newer build need an SSD?
Yes. The Steam listing names an SSD as a minimum requirement, and DirectStorage-compatible storage is recommended for the fastest loading.
Will my old mods work on the upgraded build?
Often not without an update, because many file formats changed. Check each tool’s own page first, and never use mods in multiplayer.
Which edition is better for a low-end laptop?
The 2015 build. It needs only 4 GB of RAM and a 1 GB graphics card at minimum, while the newer one needs 8 GB of RAM, a 4 GB card and an SSD.
